We need to get the last pass right, says Brown as Giants lose ‘tries’

Huddersfield Giants’ coach Nathan Brown had no complaints over any of the tries referee Robert Hicks ruled out in a scrappy Super League contest which saw the Giants comfortably defeat visitors Salford Reds.

Leroy Cudjoe and Kevin Brown were among the Giants players who had ‘touchdowns’ chalked off either for double movements or forward passes.

Home fans booed referee Hicks off at the end of the game but Brown felt it was his players who were at fault for not being clinical enough.

He said: “Any time you’ve scored 36 points and had ‘tries’ ruled out means you’ve done well.

“I’ve no problem with the ones that were ruled out.

“I thought the last passes were a fraction forward.

“That’s something we’ll have to work on. We have got to make sure we get the last passes right.”

Hooker Tommy Lee scored in each half as the Giants battered their way to a sixth win in seven games in a contest that rarely got going.

Shaun Lunt and Greg Eden also weighed in with touchdowns while points machine Danny Brough landed six goals to take his tally to 27 for the season.

Salford took the lead early on through Jodie Broughton, who had missed the last five games through injury but after that they were out-muscled by the Giants.

Brown added: “Salford have got forwards who can be dangerous and they were on top in the first half. To restrict them to only 10 points is therefore pleasing.

“But I thought our defence wasn’t good in the first half for the second time in two weeks.

“We did better after the break, but it’s something we’ll have to look at.”

Salford coach Phil Veivers said: “If I was a fan watching that I’d be sticking needles in my eyes. But as a coach it was even worse.

“We worked a lot in the week on contact and the wrestle, yet Huddersfield still out-wrestled us.

“We’ll have to look at that again. It’s a matter of pride. You don’t want to lose like that.

“But Huddersfield played us really well in the physical battle around the back. I thought Greg Eden was particularly outstanding for them. He’s a pretty special talent.”
