Warrington coach Tony Smith admitted it had been an emotional day as he said his farewell to the club after nine years in charge.

Smith’s final game as coach of the Wolves ended in a comfortable 46-24 victory over Hull KR at the Halliwell Jones stadium as Warrington ended the season unbeaten in the Super 8s Qualifiers.

Smith said: “It was highly emotional and tough out on the pitch at the end of the game.

“It’s not that I don’t want to leave, it’s just all the memories of all the good people that I’ve met and worked with and for.”

Hull KR looked in the mood to spoil the party when they raced into an 18-4 lead in the first half, before fading away.

Rovers boss Tim Sheens was pleased with the efforts of his players and felt the final scoreline did not do his side justice.

Wingers Ryan Shaw and Will Oakes each scored two tries in defeat while Jamies Ellis landed four goals.

Sheens said: “I was very happy with the effort, albeit a scoreline where we were still in it became one that was disappointing because I thought our efforts deserved more than that.

“We just ran out of steam and numbers. There was a lot of emotion behind the game for Warrrington and it started to tell at the back end.

“Overall as a team they tried very hard and we turned up to give our supporters something to cheer about and I thought we did.

“Again, like last week we fell short with 20 to go and shot ourselves in the foot with silly passes and dropped ball in our own half, and they are too good to be giving them that much ball.”
