Workington 24 Sheffield Eagles 28: Stringer’s double reward for Sheffield’s comeback

SHEFFIELD Eagles came back strongly after a poor first half to edge a late win at Workington with prop forward Mitch Stringer’s second try.

The Eagles chipped away at Town’s 24-10 lead in the final 40 minutes to claim back-to-back away victories.

Sheffield opened the scoring as hooker Andrew Henderson side-stepped in for a try with Dominic Brambani converting.

Town dominated the first half scoring as many tries as they had managed in three previous games this season.

Workington took the lead with a burst of three tries helped by Eagles errors. Half-back James Coyle went in under the posts and former Leeds winger Mark Calderwood kicked on a loose ball to collect and touch down. Substitute forward Adam Walne forced his way over to extend the lead with Brett Carter kicking the goals.

Eagles came back with Quentin-Laulu-Togagae coming into the line and sending winger Nev Morrison over wide out.

Brambani couldn’t add the goal and with two minutes to go Calderwood took a high kick to crash over with Carter adding the goal to give Town a 24-10 lead at half-time.

Carter missed a penalty soon after the restart and the Eagles got the first points of the half with replacement hooker James Davey going over under the posts. Brambani added the goal.

The margin was down to two points when Stringer powered over from close in and Brambani added the goal.

Stringer got the decisive try 10 minutes from time holding off Town tacklers and Brambani kicked his fourth goal.
