York City Knights 25 South Wales Scorpions 24: Thorman takes sting out of the Scorpions

York clinched the narrowest of victories as a field goal from Chris Thorman sailed through the uprights with less than a minute remaining of this absorbing game

But this was incredibly hard on Championship 1 new boys South Wales. Indeed they took an early lead after only three minutes as York full-back Danny Ratcliffe spilled the ball following a high bomb and Aled James collected for prop Lewis Mills to score.

York hit back with Joe McLocklan feigning to pass before burrowing through defenders to score and took the lead as Chris Thorman's pass saw prop Brett Waller break the defence and touch down.

Two tries from the Scorpions after the break turned the game around. Gil Dudson touched down from Lloyd White's stabbed kick and minutes later Dudson's exquisite pass found Christiaan Roets for Craig Richards to storm home.

York again levelled the scores as Danny Ratcliffe touched down Thorman's superbly weighted kick inches before the dead ball line. And Thorman was involved yet again as he released McLocklan for Bromilow to give York the lead.

With five minutes remaining South Wales levelled the scores again as Steve Parry gathered the ball to burrow over the line from short range. But with the clock counting down remorselessly Thorman took position to coax the ball between the uprights and ensure the three points belonged to York.
