Ahead of tomorrow’s game against fellow strugglers Richmond, the Welshman highlighted the form of Tom Williams in particular, especially for the way the 28 year-old dealt with twice World Cup-winning All Black front-row Ben Franks against London Irish.

“I think Joe Rees and Tom Williams have been one of, if not, the best tighthead and loosehead props in the league this season,” said Burnell.

“It’ll be interesting to see if we have any of our players in the Championship Dream Team at the end of the year.

“I’d say those two should be and maybe Toby Salmon as well.

“When Tom Williams went up against Ben Franks I thought he was fantastic and had him in a lot of trouble.

“Our scrum has done pretty well in most, if not all, matches this season so I’d be surprised if they both weren’t in.”

Lock Salmon, meanwhile, has clearly caught the eye as Premiership side Exeter Chiefs have announced the 23-year-old will leave Clifton Lane to join them at the end of the season.

Head coach Rob Baxter said: “What we’ve seen of Toby is he’s got the core fundamental things we look for in front-five forwards when we bring them to the club. That has been pretty successful for us in the past.”

Salmon spent time with Chinnor and London Irish before moving to Clifton Lane.

He has signed a two-year deal with Exeter.
