Sandahl shown exit door by Stingrays

GOALTENDER Tommy Sandahl has been released by Hull Stingrays and replaced by Latvian Martins Raitums.

Rumours of Sandahl's possible exit heightened after last weekend when he was replaced after conceding four goals from just nine shots in a 5-4 defeat to Elite League leaders Coventry Blaze.

Sandahl - who arrived in Hull after a season with Troja-Lungby in the Swedish second tier - conceded 162 goals in 39 games for Hull, leaving him with a save percentage of 89.3 per cent - eighth in the Elite League list.

Raitums, 24, has spent the majority of his career in the Latvian and Belarussian leagues, mainly icing for HK Riga 2000.

He also represented his country in Pool A of the World Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Hull player-coach, Sylvain Cloutier, said: "I would like to thank Tommy for his efforts, but I felt we needed a change.

"Martins may be young but he has played a lot of games and is very experienced. Riga are the number one team in Latvia and he did a good job for them."

Raitums's first game will be at home against Belfast Giants on Saturday.

"It is a tough first game for him so we will soon find out what he is made of," added Cloutier.

"He is very excited by the opportunity and I am confident he will do a good job for us."

Konstantin Kalmikov has become the fourth Stingrays player to be named in the Elite League All-Star game at IceSheffield next Wednesday.
