Scims struggle to make impact

SHEFFIELD SCIMITARS endured a disappointing weekend in the EPL when they saw in the new year with defeats at the hands of Slough Jets and leaders Milton Keynes Lightning.

On home ice, Jon Rowbotham's young team got off to a good start against Milton Keynes, going ahead at 14.03 when Stephen Wallace finished off a fine move to lift the puck over Barry Hollyhead.

Matt Towalski equalised at 27.58, but less than two minutes later, Mark Stewart wrapped the puck round and into the net on the powerplay to restore the home side's one-goal advantage.

Nothing could separate the two sides in the remaining period or the extra five minutes of overtime however and, in the penalty shootout, Adam Brittle denied Scimitars the extra point.

Saturday's trip to Slough was one to forget after Scimitars found themselves four goals down at the end of the second period.

Mark Stewart pulled one back at 44.34 but it was all the visitors could muster.

The Scimitars next home game is on Saturday, January 9 (7.30pm) at iceSheffield against Bracknell Bees.
