Second-best for GB as Freeman begins countdown to Barcelona

A total of six victories over two days ensured Great Britain and Northern Ireland finished second in the European Team Championships in Bergen.

GB had started day two in second place after a strong showing on Saturday which included victories by Dwain Chambers, Mo Farah, Colin McCourt, David Greene and Martyn Rooney with Andy Turner claiming another victory in the 110m hurdles yesterday as the team ended with 317 points, 62.5 behind Russia.

Chambers's effort of 9.99secs in the 100m was his best legal performance since he clocked an identical time at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton.

Wakefield's Emily Freeman finished fifth in the 200m, clocking a time of 23.34secs running from the inside lane. Freeman also ran a good relay leg in the fourth-placed British team.

Freeman is looking to peak just in time for the European Championships in Barcelona which start on July 27 .

Richard Buck (City of York) played his part in the team's second place in the 4 x 400m relay.

There were several Yorkshire successes at the England Under-23 and Under-20 Championships at the weekend.

Leeds City decathlete Daniel Gardiner took gold in the long jump with 7.56m, a new personal best by 23 cms.

Luke Cutts (Dearnside) won the Under-23 pole vault with a clearance of 5.25m. GB No 1 Steve Lewis failed the opening height of 5.25 in Bergen and Cutts should challenge him in next week's UK Championships.

Hull-based duo Pete Smith and James Bedford, who compete for Birchfield, were first and second in the Under-23 hammer.

Smith's winning effort of 69.92m set a new championship record, while Bedford threw 66.60m. Leeds City's Matt Hudson finished third in the Under-23 hurdles and there was an impressive 200m win by Kingston-upon-Hull sprinter Annabelle Lewis in 24.44secs in the women's Under-23 event.

Barnsley's Adele Lassu, who competes for Sale, won gold in the high jump with 1.78m and Leeds City's Alice Simpson took bronze in the hammer with a throw of 49.18m.

City of Sheffield's Tesni Ward came out top in the Under-20 women's discus with a throw of 47.17m. She was also runner up in the shot with 12.83m.

Leeds Met student Hannah Evenden (Edinburgh) finished third in the discus with 44.62m and won bronze in the hammer (55.11m).

In the Under-20 men's javelin, City of York's Paul Allsopp took second with a throw of 61.92m.

Matt Quine (City of Sheffield) was runner up in the Under-23 400m, clocking 47.64secs.
