Sheffield duo pick up medals in Glasgow

SHEFFIELD pole vaulter Luke Cutts knows there is work to do ahead of the European Indoor Championships, after the Commonwealth silver medallist opened up his season with another second place.

The 26-year-old was beaten by France’s Jerome Clavier at the season-opening Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match on Saturday, his best vault of 5.40m proving to be 10cm too little.

But Cutts remained upbeat that he was in the perfect position to top last July’s Commonwealth heroics this year, with the European Indoor Championships fast approaching in March.

“I’m not so happy with that but it’s early in the season and I’ve been consistent with my jumps so far,” said Cutts.

“I very nearly got 5.60m so there are just a few little bits I’ve got to work on.

“It’s a case of seeing where I’m at really because I struggled with a few injuries last year, some big injuries that put me out for quite a while.

“I was happy with last season, I jumped the British record and got a Commonwealth silver medal so all in all that was great.

“My main goal for the Europeans is to be on the podium so that just means going back home now; training hard and working on the bits I have to work on.”

Cutts was not Sheffield’s only athlete in action in Glasgow, as Jazmin Sawyers, 20, leapt to a bronze in the women’s long jump.

Sawyers, Commonwealth silver medallist, jumped 6.45m for a new personal best indoors.

She said: “I’m definitely looking for PBs. I haven’t had a PB in two years outdoors, which sounds ridiculous at my age – you hear that from 29-year-olds!”
