Shepley shock Golcar as Bird takes flight

Huddersfield sykes cupHOLDERS Golcar fell at the first hurdle as Shepley defeated them by 19 runs in a low-scoring game at Swallow Lane.

Golcar had reached 63-8 in reply to Shepley's total of 91 when rain curtailed play on Saturday but yesterday, Shepley captured the remaining two wickets for the addition of just nine runs. Pace bowlers Danny Glover (4-18) and Leigh Millar (4-33) did the damage.

In a tight finish at Holmfirth, Honley lost by one wicket in the last over despite a half century by Max Joice.

Ben Howitt made an unbeaten 83 and took four wickets for Thongsbridge who resumed their rain-affected game at Thurstonland and won by four wickets. Micklehurst turned up two men short for the resumption at Broad Oak and lost by 98 runs. Romain Grenville slammed 18 fours and two sixes in a 147 for Oak and spinner Gareth Durdin took five Micklehurst wickets for 24 runs.

Openers Ben Howlett (80) and Ben Simpson (68no) saw Green Moor to a nine-wicket success against Paddock and after Kirkburton lost two wickets for no runs Matthew Wood and Louis Aspeling each made 92 not out in an eight-wicket victory against Slaithwaite.

Among matches completed on Saturday, Scholes' Australian strike bowler Luke Bird took 6-16 and Andy Alsop grabbed 4-33 as Linthwaite were routed for 53, Iqbal Khan making 39 not out in an eight-wicket win.

Bird's countryman Chris Thomson followed up his seven-wicket haul against Shelley with a 6-19 return for Clayton West who ousted visitors Almondbury for 53 in 16.4 overs.

Ibrar Kola assisted with 3-22 and West openers Greg Davis (45) and Dale Baxter took their side safely home.

Elland were also 10-wicket winners hammering Kirkheaton, who had eight batsmen clean bowled as they struggled to 87 all out. Danny Rhodes and Kiwi Chris Cooper shared nine wickets.

All-rounder Bilal Khiljee made 60 and took five wickets for Delph & Dobcross, who won by eight wickets at Lepton Highlanders, while Skelmanthorpe were nine-wicket winners at Rastrick, Wasim Jaffer flaying 135 not out, including 15 fours and eight sixes. Ibrar-Ul-Haq had a 6-34 haul in Marsden's eight-wicket victory against Armitage Bridge.
