Pole vaulter Luke Cutts, of Barnsley, who recently broke the British record, joins 400m sprinter Richard Buck of York, who has won six medals at major international indoor events.

Sheffield duo Mukhtar Mohammed, a bronze medallist in the 800m in the European indoors last year, and Lee Emanuel, in the 1,500m, are also in the team.

Sprinter James Dasaolu, however, will miss out through injury. The 26-year-old posted a personal best in the semi-finals of the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham on Saturday, but was ruled out of Sopot after tearing his hamstring in the final.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson, was left disappointed after not being given an invitation by the IAAF for the pentathlon.

The 21-year-old was forced out of her qualifying event for the championships at the weekend because of illness. That left her relying on the one invitational spot, given at the discretion of the IAAF, but it was confirmed last night that she had missed out.
