Steelers prepare for Euro break in style

SHEFFIELD STEELERS snapped a six-game Elite League losing streak in comprehensive style as they prepared for next weekend's Continental Cup Super Final with an 8-0 thrashing of Edinburgh Capitals.

Netminder Andrew Verner recorded his first shutout for the club on a night which saw Steelers receive mixed news on the injury front, welcoming back defenceman Scott Basiuk after almost four months out with a shoulder injury while being denied the skills of Rod Sarich, who is suffering with a foot injury and is a big doubt for next week's European round robin adventure in Grenoble, France.

After suffering a 3-2 loss in Belfast on Saturday, Steelers responded in positive fashion against Edinburgh at ice Sheffield and got the opening goal at 15.30 when Joe Talbot fired home a short-handed strike.

It wasn't until the second period, however, that Steelers' dominance began to tell with two goals from Jeff Legue in the opening six minutes being followed by two more in 35 seconds in the 32nd minute from Jason Hewitt and Matt Hubbauer.

Defenceman Randy Dagenais made it 6-0 at 36.20, Talbot then hit his second of the night before Hewitt wrapped up the scoring at 49.11.

On Saturday, Craig Peacock opened the scoring for Belfast in the 14th minute before Legue levelled two minutes later.

Pat Bateman's shorthanded strike was followed by Jeff Szwez's powerplay goal to give Giants a two-goal lead in the second period and although that was halved by Talbot's 35th-minute powerplay effort, that was as close as Steelers would get.
