Stephens raps Manor for poor decisions

Will Stevens criticised his Manor team for their decision-making during yesterday’s British Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old was on course to finish 12th at his first home grand prix before a pit error and a spin saw him lose out to team-mate Roberto Merhi.

Stevens hit the wall as a rain showers fell over Silverstone.

But, despite 13th place still representing his best finish in the sport, Stevens was unhappy with a series of events during the race.

“It was an incredibly frustrating race,” he said.

“The whole weekend has been so positive for us, three-quarters of the race was really good. We wanted to extend our run because the rain was coming.

“A sequence of events happened – I reported it was raining and the team made a decision to bring me in but when I came in no-one was ready for me.

“I just sat there. I lost 15 seconds in the pit-lane which is frustrating when I had just built up a 20-second gap to my team-mate.”

Stevens’ afternoon went from bad to worse as he was not called in when the heaviest of the rain started – meaning he was a sitting duck on a worn set of intermediate tyres that ultimately saw him spin and hit the wall. “The team opted to pit Roberto first even though he was behind me,” he said.
