However, the Grattan Stadium outfit overcame a sluggish start and weathered a second-half Wakefield fightback to banish their recent woes.

Wakefield, who slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat, will look at what might have been after they surrendered a 12-0 lead as the loss ended any slim hopes they had of making the play-offs.

Hull KR 18 Wigan 38

WIGAN secured their first League Leaders' Shield since 2000 as they saw off a second-half fightback to claim a comfortable victory over Hull KR at Craven Park.

The Warriors were 14-0 up at half-time down but Rovers responded with three tries early in the second period to claim the lead.

However, Michael Maguire's men recovered as a second try for Pat Richards and one each for Sam Tomkins, Joel Tomkins and Josh Charnley - back with the Warriors after a successful loan spell with Hull KR - sealed the win.

For many in the 9,250 crowd the big pre-match talking point was Wigan's decision to recall centre Charnley from the Robins, where he scored five tries in five games, and put him on their replacements bench.

Huddersfield 52 Salford 4

GIANTS loose forward Stephen Wild showed his class against his future employers as the play-off contenders sealed a fourth straight win.

Wild, who is to join the City Reds on a three-year deal from next season, went over under the posts from Andy Raleigh's final pass on 27 minutes.

Salford had conceded more than 100 points in their recent hammerings by Crusaders and Hull KR and they shipped another half-century as the Giants ran in nine tries and scored eight goals.

Former Wakefield hooker Danny Brough started the rout with a brilliant solo effort only six minutes into a one-sided contest.

Castleford 40 Harlequins 28

CASTLEFORD thrust themselves back into the race for the play-offs with a crucial win over struggling Harlequins in their Engage Super League clash at the Jungle.

David Howell gave Quins the lead but the Tigers came roaring back with scores from Ryan McGoldrick, Michael Shenton and Ryan Hudson, all three goaled by Joe Westerman, before the interval.
