Swiss training pays off for medical student Heyes

The opening race of the South Yorkshire Cross Country League yesterday was won with ease by Oxford Blue Andy Heyes (Hallamshire).

Heyes, a third-year medical student, was having his first cross country race of the winter following a spell of altitude training in Switzerland.

On a fast course with the splendid backdrop of Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, Heyes was soon in the lead and was never troubled, increasing his lead all the way to finish 200 metres clear of his Hallamshire team-mate Tom Jenkins, an isolated runner up.

James Kraft (Sheffield Hallam University) led the charge behind to snatch third place.

There was an even bigger margin in the women's race with Barnsley's Jilly Ingman leading all the way to open up a big gap over Natalie Grant (Rotherham) and Calli Thackery (Hallamshire).

Ingman, 32, a junior international before a succession of injuries halted her progress, was running her first cross country race for 11 years and showed that she has still plenty to offer at top level.

World cross country champion Joseph Ebuya eased to a UK Allcomers' 10 miles record at the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth yesterday.

Ebuya took advantage of perfect weather conditions to effortlessly stroll around the flat course and strike a huge 40 seconds from the long-standing time of 45 minutes 56 seconds, achieved 15 years ago.
