Teenager Barnes pulls away at Temple Newsam

Leeds teenager Nick Barnes took his first victory of the Yorkshire Points series after a comfortable win in round five yesterday.

The race at Temple Newsam Park saw Barnes take off on the first lap with Dieter Droger and Jack Clarkson in tow.

Barnsley’s Droger, fresh from taking top spot in the SRAM Notts and Derby League on the Saturday, managed to keep pace with Barnes for much of the race.

But then, with three laps to go, he opened up a gap and went on to win by 27 seconds. Droger cruised to second place with Halifax rider Jack Clarkson, 20, almost a minute behind him.

Another rider in fine form is Bradford’s Annabel Simpson. The 23-year-old Bradford rider won the women’s category at a canter.

Keighley’s Alfie Moses, 15, emerged as youth winner after edging out Robert Scott.

In hill-climbing, Leeds’s James Gullen was second in the Otley CC two-stage event near Pateley Bridge.
