Video: Yorkshire chief exec takes Scottish FA post

YORKSHIRE chairman Colin Graves has announced he will take on the duties of the departing chief executive Stewart Regan during county cricket's off-season.

Regan is to leave Yorkshire after four-and-a-half years and will begin work with the Scottish Football Association as their new chief executive on October 5.

With Yorkshire needing to save money after the disappointing attendances for the Test between Australia and Pakistan this month, it would appear to suit the club to have Graves combining the role.

Graves, the founder and chairman of Costcutter, said: "Much has been said of the club's cashflow problems following last week's neutral Test match between Pakistan and Australia but that is a temporary blip.

"We will recover and with the support of our partners continue to build for the future.

"I have told my board colleagues that I intend to take the role of executive chairman for a period of at least six months after Stewart's departure after which we will then decide on the most appropriate structure to manage the club going forward."

Regan, 46, replaces Gordon Smith, who stepped down in April after almost three years in the post.

Regan, who led the re-branding of the second tier of English football, spent 16 years in the brewing industry, including a spell as strategic planning director for Bass.

He said: "I don't think there is anything wrong with the game - football in Scotland is an institution.

"It has incredibly passionate supporters and stakeholders from the media, sponsors and so on.

"But I think the game has drifted a bit in recent times. As an outsider looking in I have seen lots of fall-outs, lots of disagreements, challenges and criticisms of how things are done.

"I think there is a need to draw a line in the sand and say that building football for the future in Scotland isn't just the job of the Scottish FA.

"The Scottish FA can lead, but I think the Scottish FA need to bring people with them and bring partners to the table."

Regan, who worked closely with Neil Doncaster when the Scottish Premier League chief executive performed the same role at Norwich, spoke enthusiastically and repeatedly about "collaboration".

He added: "I think it starts right down when kids are growing up. We need to look at what happens in schools, right through local leagues and I would like to think we can look forward to working with our partners to get kids from the playground to professional teams."
