Watson compounds her ranking joy with victory

British No 2 Heather Watson continued her good recent form by defeating 15th-seeded Chanelle Scheepers in the first round of the AEGON Classic in Birmingham.

Watson, who climbed into the world’s top 100 on the back of her run to the second round of the French Open, eased to a 6-3 7-5 win to send her South African opponent packing.

The 19-year-old will face Misaki Doi or Edina Gallovits-Hall in round two.
