Whitaker forced to settle for second-best on Cornetto King

Belgium’s Ludo Philippaerts won the opening international class on the London International Horse Show’s final day at Olympia.

Philippaerts and Chicago vh Moleneind took the Shelley Ashman International Six Bar competition after clearing a final fence 1.85 metres high.Yorkshire’s John Whitaker (Cornetto King) and Norwegian Geir Gulliksen (Storm) finished tied for second.

British Nations Cup rider Guy Williams maintained his blistering form of the past few days by winning the Martin Collins Eraser Stakes.

Their time of 47.63 seconds was almost seven seconds quicker than Will Funnell and Billy Grand in second, while Ben Maher and Milena 8 were third.

There were two particular hard luck stories as Laura Renwick (Limelight de Breve) and Pius Schwizer (Dundee) both threatened Williams’ time, but their horses each refused at the penultimate fence.

It was Williams’ fifth victory of the show, but he could not close the gap on leader Maher for the H&M leading rider award, with Maher extending his overall advantage to 17 points heading towards the Olympia Grand Prix finale.
