Willstrop hits the road for charity ride

SQUASH: World No 4 James Willstrop will spend part of his summer break taking to the road to raise money for charity in memory of his late mother.

Willstrop, from Leeds, will be joined on a charity bike ride by his brothers David and Lee Campion, which will take them from Whitehaven to Sunderland, clocking up 150 miles between May 30-June 1.

“Even though our livelihoods depend on a certain level of athleticism, we are under no illusions that cycling is a far different stress than squash,” said 27-year-old Willstrop.

Since their mother’s death from ovarian cancer in 2000, the three brothers have raised more than £25,000 for various related charities, partly through the annual Lesley Willstrop Doubles Tournament which will be held for a fourth time in August.

The bike ride and squash doubles event will raise money for two Yorkshire-based charities – Candlelighters, who support children with cancer in Leeds and ‘HER breast friend’, a Hull-based charity who support women in dealing with breast cancer.
