Yorkshire add McKay to Twenty20 personnel

YORKSHIRE have signed Australian pace bowler Clint McKay as their second overseas player for the Twenty20 Cup.

McKay joins South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs as Yorkshire chase their first appearance in a Twenty20 finals day.

McKay, 27, has played one Test and 10 one-day internationals and was a key member of the Victoria squad who won Australia's domestic Twenty20 competition last winter.

"I am really excited about coming to Yorkshire and playing in a young side that has enjoyed such a positive start to the season," said McKay.

"I've heard a lot about the set-up at Headingley Carnegie and I'm really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere of Twenty20 cricket in the UK. I cannot wait to get started."

Yorkshire's director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon

commented: "We're a bit short on experience as far as seam bowling is concerned and Clint will help us in that regard.

"His recent record in Twenty20 is very good – he did well in the Champions League and had a good season in Australian domestic cricket – and he can bowl at the start and end of an innings."

Moxon said McKay's signing would also ease pressure on Tino Best, the West Indian pace bowler who is playing for Yorkshire as a temporary overseas player but who is set to stay for the rest of the season.

The club – who can have up to four overseas players on their books – are close to agreeing an extended contract with the 28-year-old, who has impressed during his short time at Headingley but who is unused to the rigours of an English campaign.

"We're closing in on a longer deal with Tino but need to be careful how we manage his workload," added Moxon.

"To expect him to play Championship cricket, 40-over cricket and Twenty20 cricket is unrealistic to be honest, and he needs to have a bit of a break.

"It's looking increasingly unlikely that Ryan Harris, our first-choice overseas signing, will be available due to international commitments, so to have Tino on board is a massive boost."

Moxon is crossing his fingers Best will be fit for Monday's

Championship match against Hampshire at Southampton.

Best took a whack on the thigh while batting against Somerset and faces a fitness test tomorrow.
