Yorkshire golf: Andy Whitworth wins HHDUGC seniors title at Woodsome Hall

BRADLEY Hall's Andy Whitworth took the individual honours and Huddersfield claimed the team award in the Halifax Huddersfield and District Union's seniors championship at Woodsome Hall.

Whitworth shot a 76 to take the title by two shots from the host club's Stephen Selbie.

Huddersfield's Robin Merchant placed third with an 80 and led his club team to triumph alongside John Oxley (also 80) and Allen Humphries (81).

They received the Geoff Horrocks Taylor trophy for the lowest combined net score for any three players from the same club.

The day was sponsored by Outlane's Phil Tatlock in memory of his late wife Liz.

Winners in the net age categories were Huddersfield's Jonathan Heyes (55-59), Humphries (60-64), Woodsome Hall's Gary Blakely (65-69) and Halifax's Jim Nixon (70+).

Josh Carlos recorded his third victory so far in Ghyll juniors’ weekly programme of competitions, lifting the Tyrer Tours Trophy with a score of 43 Stableford points. His handicap has come down four shots since the start of the season.

Tom Nutter’s 38pts clinched second spot, while Spencer Datkiewicz (35) shaded Jonathon Davies for third place.

On a hot and humid afternoon with thunder clouds threatening, Hilary Hardaker shot 90-19-71 to win the Marion Bateson Birthday Trophy. Eileen Chapple (94-21-73) and Pat Parrington (99-24-75) completed the top placings.

Keighley ladies captain's prize was won by Sheila Lewis with 38pts, just one clear of runner-up Elaine Pearson and two better than third-placed Liz Tabel.

Overall June medal honours went to David Jubb with a 67. Brian Marklew finished a shot back with Andy Utley third on 69.

In Division One, Callum Hey won on count back from Graham Burrill after they both carded 70.

Division Two winner was Keith Hebden on 69, one better than Jonathon Lonsdale.

Division Three was won by the same score, Bill Holder's 69 edging Peter Lawes by a shot.

Malcolm Thornton had a hole in one on the 11th during the medal.

The Buck Rabbit winner was Nick Holmes, again 69 the score that proved triumphant. Spencer Bentley and Alan Parker both shot 70 and Rex Littler 71.

Lees Hall's Broadhead Trophy final was won by Sam Nuttall (four handicap) and James Bates (12), who carded plus eight in the better ball bogey. The pair played the first five holes in heavy fog as did many of the early starters.

Three-handicapper Chris Kelly had a hole in one during the bogey event on the 174-yard 14th.
