His back nine began with a bogey at the 10th, but he birdied the 14th, 17th and 18 holes to add a 67 to opening rounds of 71 74.
Leeds's Daniel Gavins carded a second consecutive 74 to add to Thursday's 72 in an adventurous round that included only seven pars.
He shed seven shots in eight holes in the middle of his round, but book-ended the sequence of errors with five birdies.
He had moved to two under for the day, level par overall, before a calamitous run through holes five to 12.
But he showed tremendous fortitude to battle back with birdies at holes 13, 16 and 18.
