Yorkshire golf: Jamie Shepherd and eight-year-old Lucia Maturi triumph at Lindrick

LINDRICK, who are celebrating their 125th anniversary, have produced their youngest competition winner in eight-year-old Lucia Maturi.

Partnered by Jamie Shepherd, Lucia enjoyed victory in the Presidents Cup, a greensome event. They beat 35 other pairings with a 46pt total.

Lucia has been coached by Lindrick assistant professional Luke Allen since she was six, but this is her first season playing on the course.

She said: "I really enjoyed the game and it was fantastic to play with my pal Jamie. He's a great golfer and we made a great team. It was fun."

Shepherd, who recently finished runner-up in the Sheffield Plate behind Hallamshire's Alex Fitzpatrick commented: It's great to see young golfers like Lucia on the course enjoying hitting the ball and learning the game; winning was just a bonus".

Keighley's Granny Competition saw Jackie Starkie emerge triumphant with 36pts, but she required a count back to leave Sheila Lewis in second place.

June's Individual Stableford competition also required a count back to separate winner Charles Walker and runner-up Andy Snell, who both carded 37pts.

The Invitation Day Morning Shotgun contest was won with 41pts, Andy Sharp and David Armstrong finishing one ahead of three pairings on 40.

Chris Lonsdale and Craig Shoesmith took second place from Brian Canning and Ben Gill, with Eddie Dlambulo and Simon Chaney fourth.

Simon Chaney was a dual winner, showing both power and accuracy to win not only the longest drive competition, but also nearest the pin.

Thirty nine points were required for victory in the Invitation Day Afternoon Shotgun competition, won by Robert Watson and Tom Wilman.

Second on 38pts were Terry Greenwood and Richard Grundy, one ahead of Ian Phillips and Tom Starkie, who in turn were two ahead of Russell Newton and Steve Hall.

Tim Walsh hit the longest drive and G Inglis was nearest the pin.

Paul Halls won Sunday's Individual Stableford with 37pts.
