Yorkshire golf: Lynne Campbell and Elaine Fozard enjoy Champion of Champions success

Campbell and Fozard scored 59.61 net to leave Heather Butcher and Julie Wheeldon, of host club WakefieldGC, in second place on 59.67.

Glynis Blackwell and Gill Lamport (Lofthouse Hill GC) also finished on 59.67 but were placed third on count back.

Due to heavy rain and the threat of the Wakefield GC course becoming unplayable, the competition was reduced to 14 holes.

Handicap allowances were converted to 7/9th of the total combined handicap of players.

Howley Hall GC's Alison Mowat and Wakefield's Mary Smith were originally announced as winners, but noted an error had been made when recalculations were made due to the reduced length of the event.

The alliance is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In 1996 a group of far-sighted ladies from within the Leeds clubs decided to get together and form a winter alliance.

The most noted of these were Joyce Stringer, of Garforth GC, and Pat Hammill, of Pontefract GC, who became the first chairman and secretary respectively.

They kept the rules deliberately simple: monthly matches of foursomes golf, with 10 prizes awarded to the 10 best scores (10 points down to one point), with a cumulative points system to determine the winning club and runner-up at the end of March each year.

Pontefract GC ladies provided the winner’s trophy, recently won by Low Laithes for a record 11th time, and have continued to provide the secretary of the association.

Sylvia Cook followed Pat Hammill, and was in turn succeeded by current secretary Julie Ludwell.

The chair has been provided by Garforth with Joyce Stringer, Low Laithes with Margaret West and Wakefield with Angela Heath, who is to retire after 22 years following the Champion of Champions event.
