Yorkshire golf: Matthew Pearson continues two-year habit of winning Wharfe Trophy at Wetherby

MATTHEW PEARSON extended a cycle of success as he won the Wharfe Trophy over his home course at Wetherby.

Pearson, who won the inaugural competition in 2012 and shared victory in 2014, won this year with scores of 73 71.

His two-under-par tally gave him a two-shot victory over Ralph Postlethwaite (Clitheroe) who returned 76 70. Third was Joe Allenby (Hessle) with 78 69.

John Wilson and Phil Scott went low to shoot a 61 for a three-shot victory in Hessle's Alliance Cup from Rod Shimwell and Phil Bentley. Peter Marshall and Phil Marshall placed third, a shot further back.

John Deeming amassed 41pts to win the Pro's Individual Stableford from John Wilson (39) and Mark Wishart.

Forty one points had also been required to triumph in the Pro's Stableford two days earlier, Neil Muir doing so but only taking first place on count back from Paul Williams. Joseph Allenby (39) was third.

The Pro's Nine Hole Stableford was won by Keith Ward (20pts), two ahead of Paul Redshaw and John Garton.

Catterick held their Exchange Day at Harrogate where the Stableford competition was won by Sue Dines,with Gillian Dickie second and Anne Moore third.

Sue Bailey and Vicky Iveson won the nearest to the pin prizes and Tracey Snowdon hit the longest drive.

The Kitty Coney Trophy produced a close event with three players tieing at the top on 35pts. After count back, Anne Guy took first place, Margaret Ferguson was second and Pat Weymes third.

Catterick's Seniors' Stableford was won by Dennis McGregor with 38pts, two better than Andrew Ridgeway and three clear of AM Riley.

Birley Wood's Junior Crawley Cup produced some impressively low scores, with Lewis Harrison carding net 66 off nine to win by one shot.

Jamie Hatcher (88-21-67) was second and Jake Charlesworth (104-35-69) third.

Runner-up Hatcher's tally was achieved with the help of a hole in one at the par-3 12th.

Willow Valley's Invitation Day attracted 34 teams, a considerably larger contingent than in recent years.

J Rhodes (Willow Valley) and his partner T Wilson, of Shipley, took the honours with an excellent score of 46pts.

S Carrington-Ward (Willow Valley) and R Holmes, of Cleckheaton, were runners-up with 45. Third place went down to a count back with A Ahmed (Willow Valley) and S Shibil, of West End, prevailing. S Carrington-Ward and B Adamson won the nearest the pin prizes.

Ghyll's Ouzledale AM AM Open was won by SG Carpets, represented by Seahan Grace, John Blackmore, Andrew Harling and Sheldan Pickles, who made knowledge of their home course count with a score of 118pts.

Wayne Bury invited friends from farther afield in the form of Kevan Dornan (Nelson), Chris Heap (Colne) and Jason Titorenko (Skipton), who together returned 115 to take second place. The quartet of Danny Devlin, Shaun Lemon, Alexander Russell and Andrew Turner (110) came in third.

Gavin Datkiewicz, Jonathan Davies, Ben Mallinson and Bob Presland achieved the best score of 40pts in getting the ‘orange ball’ round the 18 holes.

Chris Heap got his ball within 16 inches of the cup to take the nearest the pin prize on the par-3 Curlew’s Cry hole, while the line-up of B Moore, R Preston, S Preston and A Wilkinson had the lowest combined return on the par-3 Greenberfield hole with a score of 13.

In the junior event, Matt Stevens took the Ouzledale Trophy with a score of 42, while a count back was required to separate the Paxton brothers, Freddie and Archie taking second and third places respectively with 40pts.

Hornsea's Presidents Day saw Silver category honours go to Judith Thornton with 35pts, on count back from Cath Caley, with Angie Hinch third a point further back.

Jill Marshall totalled 39pts to win the Bronze category, four ahead of Sylvia Charter and Anne Merritt.

Bob Gibbins Trophy winner was Alfie Anderson, with 40pts, two clear of Harry Anderson.

Jon Bickerdike won the Midweek Stableford with 41pts, one ahead of Sam Belcher and two clear of Danny Norton.
