Yorkshire golf: Nick McCarthy goes close at Close Hall as EuroPro Tour gets underway

MOORTOWN'S Nick McCarthy shot his lowest round of the week, a three-under-par 68, to finish third in the Lookers Championship at Close Hall, the first event of the PGA EuroPro Tour.

McCarthy ended just two shots back of the winner, Irishman Gavin Moynihan, with scores of 69 69 68 and earned a cheque for £3,000.

Two shots behind McCarthy in a tie for fourth spot were Hornsea’s Steve Uzzell (70 69 69), and two former English men’s amateur champions – Huddersfield’s Nick Marsh (70 70 69) and Hillsborough’s Joe Dean (73 68 68), who tied for 10th place.

Uzzell banked £1,475 and Marsh and Dean £950 each.

Daniel Gavins (Walton Driving Range/Howley Hall) carded 73 68 70 to share 16th place while Rotherham’s Jonathan Thomson (68 73 71) and Lindrick’s Luke Jackson (70 70 72) were tied for 23rd.

Moynihan (68 68 68) edged fellow Irishman Dermot McElroy (67 68 70) by a shot.

In a nip-and-tuck final round the lead changed hands several times before Moynihan struck the decisive blow with a birdie at the par-5 17th, which saw him to victory and the £10,000 winner’s cheque.

“I am delighted to win,” said Moynihan, who also took home a new Motocaddy S3 PRO electric trolley with lithium battery, a Bushnell Pro X2 Range Finder and Bolle sunglasses.

““It was a good battle there with myself and Dermot,” said Moynihan of his long-time friend.
