Yorkshire golf: Rochelle Morris and Emma Brown set for semi-final battle as champion Megan Lockett faces Megan Garland

Woodsome Hall GC's Rochelle Morris, recently selected for duty next month for the Great Britain & Ireland team, goes up against Emma Brown (Malton & Norton GC), who has faced the USA on three occasions.

The other semi-final sees defending champion Megan Lockett, playing on her home course, taking on Selby GC's Megan Garland.

Recent county championships have not been dealt a kind hand by the weather, but as Fixby bathed in a welcome outbreak of sunshine the 16 match play combatants produced a superb day's golf on Saturday.

Morris's selection for GB & Ireland has made hers a sought-after scalp, but after seeing off Flamborough Head GC's Georgina Hirst 5&3 in round one, the former champion defeated another host club player in Charlotte Heath.

A glorious tee-shot at the par-3 13th hole to within eight feet led to her closing out her afternoon match 6&5, but the scoreline did not do justice to Heath's impressive play, which included a 5&3 morning win over Richmond GC's Jennifer Hide.

Brown faced Hessle GC's Jessica Smee in the first round and, after beating her 4&3, endured a less comfortable afternoon duel against Lightcliffe GC's Hannah Holden.

Holden had needed only 14 holes to win through against Moortown GC's Sophie Olley in the morning and, seeking revenge for a semi-final loss to Brown last year, moved two up through eight.

She was aided by Brown going out of bounds with a shot at the seventh, but the former winner of British, English, European, South African and Scottish championship titles fought her way back into the match and closed it out with a par-5 at the last.

Lockett had to dig deep in the first round to end the hopes of Abigail Smee, sister of Jessica, putting a three-putt from short distance at the 16th out of mind to win the next and halve the last.

Her quarter-final against Woodsome Hall GC's Melissa Wood produced a 4&3 win for the champion against an opponent who had herself gone to the last green before progressing in round one, against Megan Clarke (Cleckheaton GC).

Garland had to survive both a test of nerve and defy the superb play of her morning opponent, 13-year-old Libby Kilbride (Renishaw Park GC), who played the back nine in two under par to force extra holes.

Eventually Garland prevailed, but she required two extra holes to line up a last-eight meeting with club-mate Ellie Goodall, a 3&2 winner against Fulford GC's Helen Barugh.

Garland bested Goodall 2&1 and will look to loosen Lockett's grip on the title in Sunday's second semi-final. Play gets underway at 8.30am.

The host club have chalked up one win already with Yorkshire ladies veterans champion Pat Wrightson winning the 18-hole net competition with a 73 net 70.

Lightcliffe GC's Vicki Holden (83-8-75) was second and Oakdale GC's Joyce Slater (88-10-78) third.
