Yorkshire golf: White Rose hand is strengthened by Olivia Winning's arrival

YORKSHIRE, who made it two wins out of two with a comfortable 7.5-1.5 defeat of Northumberland on day two of the Northern Counties Match Week at Penrith, have been bolstered by the addition of Scottish women's open stroke play champion Olivia Winning.

The Rotherham player was not involved on days one and two because of work commitments.

But Winning, an England international, will be warmly welcomed as Yorkshire prepare for two potentially defining matches against Cheshire and holders Lancashire.

After overcoming a foursomes deficit to beat Durham 6-3 on day one, captain Dawn Clegg’s side clicked into gear on Tuesday against Northumberland as they strive to regain the title that was dashed from their grasp by their Red Rose rivals last year.

They won two and halved one of the morning foursomes, with their marquee pairing of Yorkshire champion Megan Garland (Selby) and Curtis Cup player Rochelle Morris (Woodsome Hall) in imperious form.

Surprisingly beaten on day one, they romped to a 6&5 victory against Northumberland, while Hallamshire’s Holly Morgan and Alison Knowles (Hickleton) won 3&2.

Megan Clarke (Cleckheaton) and Lightcliffe’s Hannah Holden added a half to their first-day full point to put Yorkshire in fine shape ahead of the afternoon’s singles.

Garland led from the front, as she had against Durham, with a 6&4 triumph, and Morris – whose putter had failed her on day one – won two up.

Morgan and Clarke both won 4&3 and Holden 4&2 while Huddersfield’s Megan Lockett, last year’s Yorkshire champion, was only bested on the final hole.

“The side are gelling well and doing well, but we’re well aware of the tough games that are coming up,” said Clegg.

“We need to be very strong and it is good to have Olivia joining us for Wednesday’s and Thursday’s matches.”
