Yorkshire riders excel in Abergavenny event

Keighley’s Ian Field was crowned elite men’s champion as Yorkshire riders returned from the National Cyclo-Cross Championships in Wales with a massive haul of medals after some great performances in the blue ribband event at Abergavenny throughout the weekend.

The 28-year-old, who was the defending champion, secured a comfortable victory after spending much of the race out in front alone, while his rivals for the title battled for the minor placings behind.

Liam Killeen (Specialized UK) took second, with Lancashire’s Lewis Craven (Wheelbase) came home in third.

Bradford Olympic youngster Sophie Thackray won the Under-16 Girls category, the 15-year-old from Bingley holding off Bourne Wheelers rival Madeleine Gammons for the title.

Skipton’s Ian Taylor (Jedi Cyclesport) took second in the veterans Over-40 race, while in the veterans Over-50 race Keighley’s Chris Young (Pedalsport CC) also placed second.

There were a host of second places in the age groups for Yorkshire riders.

Keighley rider Alfie Moses, 16, took second in the junior race, while Greetland’s Jack Clarkson was runner-up in the Under-23 race.

Barnsley’s Jenson Young (Pedalsport CC) was second Under-14 boy, while 15-year-old Leeds rider Tom Pidcock (Chevin Cycles) finished second in the Under-16 boys race.

Bingley’s Marie Jackson (Bradford Olympic) was third in the veteran women’s race, while just missing out on a medal in the elite women’s race was Amira Mellor (Bradford Olympic), although the 17-year-old was first junior woman and fourth overall.
