Yorkshire's match with Durham ends in a draw

TINO BEST marked his LV County Championship debut with four wickets as Yorkshire forced Durham to follow on, but the match still fizzled out into a draw.

With three wickets in the morning session and one in the first over after lunch, Best dashed Durham's hopes of taking maximum batting bonus points as they were dismissed for 330 in reply to Yorkshire's 610-6 declared.

Durham were severely handicapped when opener Michael Di Venuto was unable to continue his first innings 108 in the morning because of a side strain picked up while batting the previous day.

His absence boosted Yorkshire's chances of making a breakthrough when Durham resumed on 215-4 and Best responded with two wickets in three balls.

Ian Blackwell jabbed a full-length ball into his stumps to make it 228 for five and two balls later Best found the edge of Phil Mustard's bat for wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow to take a low catch.

Durham were far from finished, however, and Ben Stokes, who had replaced the injured Di Venuto at the start of play, helped his side recover by putting on 59 for the seventh wicket with Liam Plunkett.

Stokes stepped down the pitch and drove David Wainwright for a straight six, but the return of Best with the second new ball brought about his undoing, the left-hander giving Bairstow another catch behind the stumps.

After a nervous start against the leg spin of Adil Rashid, Plunkett had opened up with some fine shots and he earned Durham a third batting bonus point by bringing up the 300.

Consecutive boundaries off Steve Patterson took Plunkett to his half-century off 90 balls, but he fell to the paceman's next delivery which he played into his stumps and Durham were 320-8.

Scott Borthwick impressed with some positive strokes but he lost last man Chris Rushworth in the first over after lunch as Best uprooted his middle stump.

That gave the West Indian figures of four for 31 in seven overs on the final day after failing to claim a wicket earlier in the match.

Borthwick was rewarded for his efforts by being promoted to open the second innings with Karl Coetzer and the pair scored 46 in 22 overs before bad light and rain brought the game to a close with 38 overs remaining.

Yorkshire picked up nine points to Durham's six.
