WORK created by a York sculptor during a month-long residency in Hungary will be among the 'stunning' pieces the public will be able to discover at the city's open studios event.

Penny Phillips will be swapping her usual surroundings of the Rogues Atelier, Fossgate, for a space at The Hungary International Ceramics Studio, 80km south of Budapest, from this weekend. She will get the chance to collaborate with artists from around the work, before bringing her work back to her hometown before the York Open Studios weekends in April.

She said: “Collaboration is important to me, particularly being with other artists working in a similar medium, I think it is equally important to allow myself to be open to discovering new ideas and approaches.”

More than 70 venues across the district, from artist’s houses to community spaces, will open for two weekends from April 15.

York Open Studios’ chair said: “This is a great opportunity to explore a different side of York. Studios are located all around the area, from the historic city streets to leafy suburbs and surrounding villages. Pop into studios, have a chat and perhaps a cup of tea with the artists and uncover the stories behind their work. You could even find yourself travelling home with a stunning new artwork.”
