For more than twenty years the Gould have been at the forefront of chamber music in this country, but nowadays their frequent tours taking them from our shores, which makes this concert most welcome.
Their programme is devoted to Schubert with two of the most lengthy and challenging works in the piano trio repertoire. They were composed at the same time as he was writing the tortured and extended song-cycle, Die schone Mullerin, a score that occupies the entire concert by the baritone, Roderick Williams, and pianist, Iain Burnside, (February 4).
Ensemble 360, in their home venue, will feature in many permutations throughout the Winter Season, with a ‘mix and match’ format taking them through a particularly interesting evening of music – both original works and in transcriptions – by Sibelius, Richard Strauss, Martinu, Lutoslawski and Spohr (February 1).
They have also invited a number of famous guests who will appear at the neighbouring Upper Chapel, The Schubert Ensemble offering a coupling of Piano Quintets by Dohnanyi and Elgar (February 10), and we have a celebrity recital by the pianist, Stephen Hough, who plays Debussy, Schumann and Beethoven, in a concert not to miss (March 9).
