On this day in Yorkshire 1916

More ground was regained by the British at Longueval and Delville Wood yesterday morning.

At the Longueval-Bazentin position, and on the British left our line was advanced, and prisoners and a gun were captured.

Our advance yesterday north of this position extended over 1,OOO yards. It was stubbornly contested. British aeroplanes have carried out big enterprises with much success.

The Kaiser is said to have been present at the launching of the German counter-attack. On both sides of the Somme the French have made substantial advance, capturing first line trenches, and taking nearly 3,000 prisoners and many guns.

In a big raid near Armentieres Australian troops participated. About 140 Germans were captured.

German report states 300 British captured in sharp fighting at Elles. On right bank of the Meuse French made progress Thiaumont and Fleury and took 150 prisoners.

Secret inquiries are to be held into the Gallipoli and Mesopotamia campaigns.

Further long lists casualties were issued last night. Tho names of 402 officers and men were given, including many in North-country regiments. No important operations have taken place in Mesopotamia during the last week.

Excessive heat is being recorded with temperatures of over 120 degrees.
