A large brown and white dog of the bull terrier type ran wild on the Sutton Estate, Tyersal. Bradford, today, and after biting several children and an adult (all of whom were treated locally and allowed go home) eluded the attempts of a substantial body of police to capture it.

Police cars and vans combed the district for several hours without success. A number of people reported that they had seen the dog in certain places, but in each case it had disappeared by the time the police arrived.

So confusing were the clues that it became impossible to judge which direction the dog had taken.

Police-boxes in all parts of the city were notified. The owner of the dog is Mr. J. T. Stainborn, of Sutton Crescent who bought when it was a puppy as a companion for his invalid daughter, Ellen Stainborn.

His sister, Mrs. Annie Ratcliffe said that the dog, whose name was “Prince” had always been exceptionally good-tempered and had played nearly every day with small children in the neighbourhood.

Two of the children bitten - Ronnie Atwell, aged five, and Winnie Wright, aged seven - had often played with it.
