Doctors fighting for th elife of the world car racing champion Niki Lauda, who was injured in Sunday’s German Grand Prix, described his condition as still critical yesterday.

The doctors at the Mannheim University Clinic said they have brought the 27 year old Austrian’s heart, circulatory system and lung functioning under control.

Lauda, the 1975 Formula 1 world champion damaged his lungs by inhaling poisonouus fumes when his red Ferrari crashed in flames on the second lap on the Nurburgring track.

25 hurt when day trip coach skids into vicar’s garage

A driver was trapped and passengers thrown from their seats when a coach smashed head on into a stone wall in the village of Coniston Cold, near Skipton.

The 29 seater Wallace Arnold coach from Bradford was taking 25 people on an afternoon outing to Morecambe. It had been raining, shortly before the coach went out of control on the main Skipton to Settle Road.

Six ambulances took all the passengers and the driver to Airedale General Hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

Three Men Affected by Chemical

Three men were taken to hospital yesterday after trying to cope with a spillage of chemicals on the M62 at Salendine Nook, near Huddersfield.

Russians Break Hose Ban

Officials at the Russian Embassy in London were warned yesterday about breaking the ban on the use of garden hoses.

They were reported to the police after someone saw a hose being used on the parched Embassy Gardens in Kensington Palace Gardens.
