On this day in Yorkshire 1976

The QE2 liner was limping back to Southampton last night after fire swept its engine room while it headed out into the Atlantic with 1,200 passengers aboard.

The hour long fire damaged one of her two engines. A crew member was slightly burned but none of the passengers was hurt.

The cause of the blaze was not known. It occured while most passengers were asleep and the ship was 80 miles west of the Scilly Isles.

The liner had been bound for New York after having called at Cherbourg. Most of the passengers are American tourists. They will be flown out to the United States.

England fight back against the West Indies at Headingley

Tony Greig transformed the taunting rhythms of a buoyant West Indian Headingley into the background music for an overdue personal triumph in the fourth Test match.

Greig, and England captain bedevilled by loss of form and mocked by his record poured 195 minutes into an innings which salvaged some English hopes and much of his jaded pride.

Greig finsihed the day on an unbeaten 89 after in looked like England would have to follow on chasing a West Indies forst innings score of 450.
