Music Preview: John Law's New Congregation at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, Leeds and at Wakefield Jazz

London born pianist and composer John Law may well be classically trained but over the last 30 years he's embraced a more eclectic approach to composition and performance centred around the jazz idiom, but which draws influences from world, electronic and rock music.

So, this means that Law’s fearsome technique is always tethered to melody, rhythm or even driving grooves.

Law’s latest release, These Skies In Which We Rust, is a double CD and manages to capture all the facets of his musical persona, brimming with ideas and a determination as always to push his music forward. These promise to be very special gigs and the region is lucky to get two chances to catch a musician and composer of Law’s quality absolutely on top of his game.

For these dates, Law is joined by saxophonist Sam Crockatt, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Dave Hamblett, three considerable young talents in modern jazz in the UK.

Law’s concert at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, Leeds takes place on April 7. His Wakefield Jazz on April 15 has the added distinction of marking the 1,000th gig staged by this venerable, not for profit promoter, which will celebrate its 30th year of operations in 2017.
