On this day in Yorkshire 1941

A start will be made in Leeds tomorrow with the delivery of indoor shelters, which would have been available two or three weeks ago if component parts had been received from Government contractors.

As announced in these columns a week ago, the number allotted to Leeds is 3,400, and the Corporation had obtained 1,500, but were awaiting nuts and bolts for assembly.

There have been 163 applications for purchase at £7 12s 6d and 2.509 applications for free supply in cases where the income or earnings limit does not exceed £350 a year.

These shelters of the table type are of steel an eighth of an inch thick and measuring six feet four inches by four feet, providing sleeping quarters for man, wife, and two children.

They have been designed to withstand the debris of a three-storey house falling on them.

One condition is that they must be on the ground floor, and another that an architect instructed by the Corporation must survey the premises to see if they are suitable.

The Corporation will notify applicants of the delivery date.
