Turner's Return - But not as you know it

Turner is teaming back up with his other band, The Last Shadow Puppets, for a world tour starting on the 29th March in Edinburgh.

The Sheffield born singer will also play at Sheffield City Hall, Sunday April 3rd, in a reunion with his other rock buddies, co-front man Miles Kane, producer James Ford and Zach Dawes.

With the second album set to be released on April 1st, they’ve already given fans a taste of what to expect by releasing the first single off the album, Bad Habits.

Fans have had an eight-year wait for the new album after the duo released The Age Of The Understatement back in 2008.

The second album, Everything You’ve Come To Expect, will be Turners first return to the stage since the Monkeys released AM in 2013.

Concert tickets for the gig will go on general sale on Friday (29th) at 9am costing £45.

Turner and co are currently cerebrating ten years of staggering success. But who really is this Yorkshire lad whose responsible for their success?

Early years:

• Turner took piano lessons at the age of eight and enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, David Bowie and The Carpenters. His Dad, David Turner was also a keen musician who played the clarinet, piano and saxophone.

• He was a popular lad at school, excelling in sport,especially basketball. At college he studied English, Psychology, Music technology and Media. He also worked as a barman in The Boardwalk, Sheffield.

• At the age of seven Turner met Matt Helders (drummer) as they both went to the same Primary school as each other. The two then met Andy Nicholson (guitarist) at High school. The three of them were all into guitar bands and were captivated by The Hives and The White Stripes. In 2002 he attended his first gig in Manchester watching The Vines and the following year went to London with Helders & Nicholson to watch the Strokes play.

The making of the Arctic Monkeys

• Christmas 2001, Turners parents bought him his first guitar. In the summer of 2002, Turner, Cook, Nicholson and Helders decided to form a band, having watched friends play at local pubs. The name Arctic Monkeys was conceived by Cook. All four were beginners on their instruments; they practised in both Turner and Helders’ garages and, later, at an unused warehouse in Wath.

• Their first gig was on Friday, 13 June 2003, supporting The Sound at a local pub called The Grapes. Their eight-song set included three covers and five self-composed songs.

• Geoff Barradale became their manager after their third gig (at The Boardwalk) and paid for them to record four more three-song demos. Barradale drove the band around venues in the north of England to establish their reputation, handing out copies of the demo CDs after each show and leaving coipes on buses around the city. Fans began sharing the unofficial ‘Beneath the Boardwalk’ demo compilation online and, by the end of 2004, fans knew words to the songs.

• In May 2005, they self-released their first EP,’Five Minuets with Arctic Monkeys’ They then signed to the independent label Domino Records after a bidding war in 2005.

• Their first album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ released in January 2006, became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history.
