York residents can discover the charms of city's '˜closely guarded secret' for free

After buying them in 1897, Frank Green transformed three adjacent properties into a magnificent show home to house his extensive collection of period antiques, art and furniture.

Upon his retirement in 1930, the house and its contents were entrusted to the stewardship of the National Trust, and the organisation will celebrate the anniversary with free entry for all York residents with a valid York Card on Tuesday July 5.

They can learn more about what Mr Green changed at Treasurer’s House and the fate of some of Yorkshire’s other great houses in its new exhibition, Demolition and Restoration.

Visitor operations manager at Treasurer’s House, Anne Inskip, said: “Hidden in an unspoiled corner of York is this magnificent mansion. A visit to Treasurer’s House leaves you feeling like you’ve been let into closely guarded secret. We are delighted to celebrate the National Trust’s 86 years of stewardship of Treasurer’s House by inviting York Card holders the chance to discover the unique charms of this property for themselves.”
