The Selfish Giant, written and directed by Clio Barnard, who grew up in Otley, near Leeds, was filmed in Bradford and tells the story of two boys, played by Bradford teenagers Conner Chapman and Shaun Thomas, who steal scrap metal.
It is nominated in the Outstanding British Film category alongside Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Gravity and Rush.
The Selfish Giant has already won accolades, including a British Independent Film Award for best technical achievement.
Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave picked up 10 nominations.
The movie, which is heavily tipped for the Oscars, received nominations for McQueen and three of its stars and is in the running to be named best film.
The other contenders for best film include Philomena, Captain Phillips, American Hustle and Gravity.
York-born Dame Judi Dench is nominated for the leading actress award for her role in Philomena which is based on the true story of a woman’s search for the son she was forced to give up for adoption in 1950s Ireland.
Gravity leads the pack in number of nominations with 11, one ahead of both 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle.
