Normal People star's time in Halifax's history

Before her time in BBC's hit series Normal People, star Daisy Edgar-Jones stepped into Halifax's history for a role in Sally Wainwright's Gentleman Jack.

The series stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal as Marianne and Connell and is based on the international literary phenomenon, Normal People by Sally Rooney.

The series tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in a small town in the west of Ireland, to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.

Normal People has been one of the most popular shows on BBC IPlayer during lockdown, with 3.13 million people tuning in to episode one since the end of March.

Before starring as Marianne, Daisy appeared as Delia Rawson in the first series of Gentleman Jack.

In the series the Rawson family, headed up by brothers Christopher and Jeremiah, had disagreements with Halifax diarist and landowner Anne Lister over coal mining.

Delia Rawson was also seen to be friends with Ann Walker, Anne Lister's partner.

Scenes for the first series were filmed in Shibden Hall, Halifax as well as other Calderdale locations and historic homes around Yorkshire.

Filming was due to begin for the second series of Gentleman Jack earlier this Spring but due to the Coronavirus crisis it was delayed.

It is unknown when it will restart.
