Review: Independence Day: Resurgence

It has been 20 years since American President Thomas J Whitmore (Bill Pullman) issued his rallying cry to the human race and inspired a global air force including crack pilot Steven Hiller (Will Smith) to repel alien invaders intent on destroying Earth.

Following the devastating showdown, the United Nations establishes a new early warning program named Earth Space Defense (ESD) under the direction of kooky scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), which should alert us to future incursions by hostile extra-terrestrials.

We also salvage the remains of the alien technology and adapt it to create a more advanced military.

However, we are blissfully unaware that the aliens from the initial attack sent a distress signal to the rest of their battalion before their defeat and a powerful second wave is poised to storm the planet.

The current President Elizabeth Lanford (Sela Ward) issues the battle cry and ace pilots take to the skies including Steven Hiller’s stepson Dylan (Jessie Usher), former President Whitmore’s daughter Patricia (Maika Monroe) and Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth), whose parents perished 20 years ago during the failed initial invasion by the extra-terrestrial forces.
