Here are the top nine hacks to save money on holiday:

Ensure your EHIC is valid

If you’re holidaying in Europe it’s a wise idea to make sure your European Health Insurance Card is valid, as it entitles you to the same treatment as a local and won’t cost you a penny.

Turn off 3G/4G data roaming to avoid charges

If you forget to turn off your 3G/4G you may be in for a pricey shock. Setting your phone to airplane mode whilst abroad can put your mind at ease that your mobile isn’t racking up charges.

Stay away from the highly touristy areas

Everything from restaurants to souvenir shops will be more expensive in the more touristy areas. Heading just five to ten minutes down the road could save you a lot of money.

When dining out don’t eat in squares

Eating in squares, particularly those by famous sights, can cause you to have an overpriced meal as prices are increased due to tourism. Some of the most authentic restaurants can be found down side streets, resulting in a delicious meal and pennies saved.

Choose walking over taxis

Walking is a great way to take in everything a country has to offer, it allows you to stop and admire famous sights and discover hidden gems. The price of taxis and public transport adds up, so walking will eliminate that cost.

Don’t open the hotel mini bar

Hotel mini bars are well-known for greatly pricing up products, so bringing snacks with you from home or stocking up at a local food store can save you a lot of money.

Make use of age discounts

If you’re over 60, under 18 or a student make sure you ask about any possible discounts when in shops, visiting museums or using public transport, and don’t forget to take a valid ID with you.

Shop tax-free

If you’re holidaying in the EU there’s no tax or duty-free, however if you’re travelling further afield there will be. You can get a refund on the local taxes by shopping in places participating in tax-free shopping for tourists. Keep all your receipts and when back in the UK present them at the airport at the designated counter.

Have a budget

Budgeting on holiday will stop you from spending money you don’t have. Set yourself a daily allowance to cover food, day trips, and shopping. Any money left over at the end of the holiday you can put towards funding your next.
