Review: Footloose ****

At Leeds Grand Theatre

Footloose the dance musical literally explodes on to the stage with its amazing dance routines and iconic 80’s songs. It tells the story of city boy Ren who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned. Life in small-town Bomont is peaceful but Ren, breaking every taboo in the book, is determined to bring dance back to the heart of a town held back by the memory of a tragedy. Teamwork is the key to this production’s success and an energetic young cast work their way through a myriad of exciting routines. The musical evolves around Ren and it is a challenge for any performer, but Adam C Booth tackles this marathon role with conviction.

Lorna Want, as Ariel, creates the transition from the sugary-sweet preacher’s daughter to a feisty teenage temptress beautifully with some dynamic dance routines. For those who remember Steven Pinder as Max in Brookside there’s a big surprise in store. As the party-dance pooper Rev Shaw Moore his characterization is utterly believable and he can certainly sing and dance.

Packed with songs that set your feet tapping, such as Holding Out For A Hero, Let’s Hear It For The Boy and the title song, this show had a first night audience dancing in the aisles.

To July 2.
