All Yorkshire-London trains halted after man killed on track
Officials say “major delays” will continue until at least 7pm, with residual delays lasting further into the evening.
Virgin, Grand Central, Great Northern and Hull Trains services are all affected.
Hundreds of fans travelling to London for the international soccer friendly between England and Holland at Wembley were among those caught up in the delays.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “At approximately 2.50pm on Tuesday, 29 March officers from BTP were called to the line near Sandy station following reports that a person had been struck by a train.
“Colleagues from the East of England Ambulance Service also attended the scene where a man was pronounced dead.
“Officers are currently at the scene making enquiries and at this stage the man’s death is being treated as non-suspicious.”
Today’s incident comes just a day after overhead wire problems brought major delays to the same stretch of line.
