Asda stays tight-lipped over brewery move

ASDA said it had “no news to share” yesterday following reports that it is set to buy the Tetley’s brewery site in Leeds.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that the supermarket giant has shown “huge interest” in 22-acre site in Hunslet, which has been valued at £65m.

It was suggested that the Walmart-owned retailer would relocate from its current headquarters in Great Wilson Street to the new location.

But a spokesman for Asda told the Yorkshire Post: “You’ll appreciate there’s lots of interest in such a prominent site, and because of our proximity to it and our recent expansion to our new second home at The Mint it’s understandable that we’d be linked to this new opportunity. What is certain is that we’re a big part of the economy in Leeds, both from a head office and store perspective, but as we told our colleagues, there is no news to share about relocating from Asda House or The Mint, or building a new store on that site.”

A spokeswoman for Carlsberg UK told the YEP: “Carlsberg UK continues to look at opportunities for the future of the Tetley’s site.”

Asda took two floors at The Mint late last year to house its accounts payable, customer contact centre and IT departments and 350 staff.

Some 2,700 staff are based at Asda House in Great Wilson Street, its home since the 1980s.

The group’s chief executive, Andy Clarke, is also chairman of Marketing Leeds.
