BAM wins £9.3m Sheffield technical college contract

BAM Construction has won a £9.3m contract to create a second University Technical College in Sheffield.

The contractor, which has offices in Leeds, will build UTC 2 Sheffield on the Olympic Legacy Park in Don Valley.

BAM is currently on the Park building the Oasis Academy Don Valley.

UTC 2 Sheffield will specialise in human sciences and computing, two of the key growth sectors in the Sheffield City Region.

Set to open in September 2016, the centre will accommodate 600 pupils aged 14 to 19.

Specialist teaching facilities will be included on the ground and first floors of the four-storey building. The building has been designed with a central atrium will create spacious, light, learning environments. Ten per cent of its energy will come from renewable sources.

Second and third floor terraces and a third-level dining area will look over the Olympic Legacy Park, which will include a playing pitch for rugby league side Sheffield Eagles, a basketball arena for the Sheffield Sharks, the Oasis Academy, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and public cycle ways.
