City firms defy economic gloom

HULL has topped the table in a national survey of British cities that have managed to defy the economic gloom.

According to a study by information services company Experian, Hull’s businesses have experienced the highest level of improved sales growth in the country. A spokesman for Experian said: “Between 2009 and 2011, over a third of businesses in Hull (36 per cent) achieved revenue growth of over 10 per cent per year compared to the 2008-2010 period, when only 21 per cent of businesses in the city were achieving this level of growth.”

Max Firth, of Experian, said: “Places like Stoke-on-Trent, Hull, Wolverhampton and Birmingham are incubating some strong businesses.”
